Photo 16: Setze die 15 Kugeln mit etwas Fett ein ... Fit 15, 5/16 in. (8mm) ball bearings, use a little grease to hold them together during reassembly.

Photo 17: Einsetzen des oberen Lagerringes. Nun haben wir ein Problem. Der Ring soll höher stehen als das Gehäuse, weil mit dem Deckel das Lagerspiel eingestellt wird. Das geht aber nicht wenn der Lagerring tiefer sitzt ... Install the upper ball race. Now I have a problem. The ball race should be higher than the flange, because the bearing preload should be adjusted with the cover plate. Here the ball race is too deep into the bore of the steering housing.

Photo 18: Eine Tasse Kaffee und eine Zigarette später haben mein Bruder und ich eine Lösung für das Problem gefunden. Auf der Drehbank wurde ein Absatz von 0,3 mm an den Deckel gedreht. Die Zeichnung verdeutlicht das ... After a cup of coffee and a cigarette, me and my brother Martin found a solution for the problem. We machined the cover plate to give it a center that is 0.3mm higher, so that it will meet the upper ball race like it should. Look at the drawing I provided in photo 18.

Photo 19: Den Deckel aufsetzen und drei Muttern mit den Fingern anziehen, die Lenkmutter drehen und nochmals die Muttern von Hand nachziehen. Mit einer Fühlerlehre das Maß zwischen Deckel und Lenkgehäuse messen. Anhand des Maßes die richtige Scheibe auswählen ... Fit the cover plate and tighten three nuts by hand. Turn the main nut then check the three nuts by hand again. Use feeler gauges to inspect the gap between the cover plate and steering housing. Select the correct size shim.

Photo 20: Den Deckel abnehmen und Fett einfüllen ... Take the Cover Plate back off and fill in with grease.

Photo 21: Die Scheibe aufsetzen ... Fit the shim.

Photo 22: Den neue Dichtungring mit der Lippe nach innen reindrücken. Der Dichtring muß innnen bündig mit den Deckel sein .. Fit a new seal with the lip facing inwards. Be sure that the seal is not higher than the inner face of the plate.

Photo 23: Den Deckel ohne Dichtmittel aufsetzen und die sechs Muttern festschrauben. Die Mutter soll sich leicht drehen lassen aber kein Seitenspiel haben. Ist das in Ordnung, Deckel abnehmen, Flächen reinigen, Silikon auftragen, Deckel aufsetzen, die sechs Muttern festschrauben und die Sicherungsbleche umbiegen. Nochmals das Spiel prüfen ... Fit the cover plate back on dry and tighten the six nuts fully. The main nut should turn freely without sideplay. If this is O.K., take the cover plate back off, clean the surfaces, put silicone on the surfaces. Fit the cover plate back on, tighten the six nuts fully, then bend the tab washers over. Check the main nut again, it should still turn freely with out any sideplay.

Photo 24: Das Lenkgetriebe so drehen, daß die Öffnung der höchste Punkt ist. Mit Öl vollfüllen ... Turn the gear so that the bore is on the top. Fill up fully with gear oil.

Photo 25: Verschlußschraube festziehen ... Fit the plug.
