Die Kühlerhaube ... The Cowl

Tja Leute, es nützt ja alles nichts ... aber so langsam muß ich mich mit der Kühlerhaube beschäftigen. In den letzten 3 Jahren hab ich mich erfolgreich um dieses Thema gedrückt, aber wenn ich den Schlepper dieses Jahr fertig haben will, muß ich mal Gas geben.

Schaut Euch die ersten Bilder mal an, die Haube sieht echt grauenhaft aus. Ich hab die Haube in den letzten 3 Jahren öfter als jedes andere Teil vom Schlepper in der Hand gehalten und überlegt, wie ich dem "Feind" zu Leibe rücken kann.

Well, the front cowl is of no use to me this way ... but if I want to finish my tractor this year, I'm going to have refabricate it to make it work. For the last 3 years I always found a reason not to start on this project, but I think it's time now to overhaul the cowl.

Look at the first pictures. Not a pretty sight! In all of my time while working on the restoration of my Dexta, there was no other part of my tractor, that I held in my hands more often, than the cowl. It was always on my mind, I kept asking myself, "How in the world am I going to fix this?"

My first thought was to buy a new cowl. Thought and done, but the delivered cowl was a bad fit and I sent it back to the seller for a refund.

Also hab ich heute angefangen die alte Haube zu überarbeiten. Um mir das Ausbeulen zu erleichtern und um den Rost zwischen den beiden Haubenblechen zu entfernen, hab ich alle Schweißpunkte entfernt und die Haube in seine Bestandteile zerlegt.

You can see from the pictures above how it fit and can understand why I sent it back. It was of no use to me that way, so I'll have to fix my old cowl. The first step is to take it apart. It has a lot of dents and a lot of rust, but I I think it would be easier to fix all these problems when it's reassembled.

Also ich muß ja ehrlich zugeben, das ich nicht gerade der Experte in Sachen Blechbearbeitung bin. Ich denke aber, das Geduld und das richtige Werkzeug zu guten Ergebnissen führen sollten. Ich hab mir eigens für diese Arbeit einen Satz allerfeinster Ausbeulhämmer zugelegt und werde mit viel Geduld und Zeit die Haube Stück für Stück ausbeulen und schweißen. Die ersten Bilder sehen doch schon recht vielversprechend aus, oder?

Well, I'm not an expert on sheet metal work, but I think that with a little patience and the correct tools I will end up with acceptable results. So the first thing I did was go buy me a good set of sheet metal hammers, and if you will indulge me for a few days I'll get started on the project that I have put off for so many years. Look at the first pictures. Not to bad for starters is it?

Da die Nase am oberen Ende etwas hervorstehen muß, war ich zunächst etwas ratlos wie ich das anstellen sollte. Mit roher Gewalt ist da nichts zu machen. Ich hatte dann die Idee mir eine Negativform anzufertigen, in die ich das Blech hineintreiben werde. Hartmut Lindner war so freundlich mir eine gute gebrauchte Kühlerhaube zu leihen. Ihr werdet Euch sicherlich fragen, wieso ich nicht gleich die gute gebrauchte Haube an meinem Dexta schraube? Ganz einfach, die Haube hat einen werksseitigen Stanzfehler. Die beiden großen Löcher für die Gitter sind schief geprägt, und zwar so schief, das es sofort ins Auge fällt.
Um nun das Negativ anzufertigen, hab ich die Kontor mit einem Stück Kabel abgenommen, mit Sprühfarbe auf ein Stück Holz übertragen und mit der Bohrmaschine und Senker ausgebohrt. Den Feinschliff hab ich mit der Flex und Drahtbürste gemacht. Damit die Nase exakt ausgerichtet ist, hab ich zwei kleine Löcher hineingebohrt und die Haube auf dem Holzklotz befestigt. Das Blech wurde dann vorsichtig in die Vertiefung getrieben. Ich hatte mir etwas mehr davon versprochen, denn es war noch jede Menge Nacharbeit erforderlich. Mit dem Ergebnis bin ich nicht 100%ig zufrieden, aber sieht schon nicht schlecht aus.

The nose on top of the cowl should extend out a little, but the nose on my cowl is just flat from all the crashes it has been through. At first I was at a loss on how I should go about fixing this problem. Then I had an idea to make a negative mold of the nose into a piece of wood to help me recreate it. Hartmut Lindner was kind enough to loan me a good used cowl, so that I'd have something to go by, in making my mold. I used a piece of wire to make a copy of the outer shape and spray painted over it, to transfer an outline onto the piece of wood. With my drill and my grinder I created the negative mold into the wood. I don't know if this will work, but it sure looks to me like it will, more about this tomorrow. I drilled two small holes into the body of the cowl and used two screws to hold it in place. I then used my new body hammers to form the metal into the negative mold. It didn't work as good as I thought it would and I'm not all that satisfied with the results, but it looks much better than it did before I started. At least now I have something to work with.
